The 18-year-old is second only to Karim Benzema in terms of scoring in the competition as a whole, but has beaten the Real Madrid man on another count

Kylian Mbappe’s goal for Monaco against Manchester City made him the youngest Frenchman ever to score in the Champions League knockout stages.

Often compared to Thierry Henry, the striker scored his side’s second goal at the Etihad Stadium when he latched onto a long ball forwards and fired into the top corner of Willy Caballero’s net.

It meant that he has scored in Europe’s top competition at a younger age than the Arsenal legend, who also started his career at Monaco, but did not score at the elite level until he was 20, when he registered on his debut against Bayer Leverkusen.

18 years & 2 months – Kylian Mbappé is the 2nd youngest French player to score in the CL after Benzema (17 years & 11 months). Monumental

Mbappe only turned 18 in December, which means that only Karim Benzema of his compatriots has struck at a younger age in the entire competition.

However, Benzema’s goal, which came against Rosenborg when he was 17 and 11 months, was a group-stage affair, and he would not find the target in the knockout rounds until he scored against Manchester United as a 20-year-old.
